Sue Lilley is a new author for me to read - but I'm always willing to read a new author -- that way if they are really good, that is someone else that I enjoy continuing to read. When asked to read and review this story, I discovered that I had already bought the book but for some reason hadn't read it yet. I didn't realize that it was as short of a short story as it was. The main characters -- Joel and Mandy -- knew each other as kids and now (years later) are having a chance meeting. I don't write spoilers -- but OMG, the ending did catch me off guard.
Even though this is a short story -- you will definitely not be able to stop until you reach the ending. ENJOY!!!

Painting Rainbows edition by Sue Lilley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Mandy and Joel have known each other ever since they were young, they meet again and have a summer affair and at the end of the summer, they agree to reunite a year later and see if their feelings for each other are still strong.
I couldn’t really connect with the characters, it’s not long before they start having sex even though we don’t know much about them and whatever time they spent together was quickly summarized.
Besides the sex, I didn’t really see them connect emotionally and I couldn’t understand why they didn’t stay in a long distance relationship for that year even though they said that they loved each other.
Plus, everything was so rushed in the story that the twist in the end didn’t have the same emotional impact that it would have, had the characters been developed better and the pace of the story was slower.
I voluntarily reviewed the free copy i received via Reading Alley.
Honestly, I am not a huge fan of short stories. So, when asked if I would review this book, I debated over whether or not I wanted to take the time. I really liked the cover art and the brief description. So, I decided to go for it.
I thought that the author did a good job. I liked the characters and the story line was very poignant. I can't really say more without giving things away.
Personally, I like the author's writing style, and I am interested in reading some of her other works. It looks liker her other two pieces are full length novels, so, they interest me.
...that leaves one wishing it had been longer. The story evolves and wraps up quickly, with an unexpected twist at the end.
An entertaining short story about young love. As the title suggests the writing is very descriptive. I enjoyed reading this book.
This story really tugs on the heartstrings and leaves you with some major feel. It's a wonderful short story that lets you get the whole story from beginning to end in one sitting. The end is one for the books.
This is a new to me author and I LOOOVED this book, I just wish it was longer. It tucked at my heartstrings and was emotional. Did I mention I want more? Yep, too short but perfect for something while waiting for the kids at sports or right before bed.
A predictable lost-love story told a thousand times. But Sue Lilley is able to bring the reader into a familiar landscape with an artistry that the pseudo starving artist of her story does not possess, negating the disappointment that comes with familiarity. One line, in which the author paints the young and beautiful Mandy (what else would she be) twisting her finger through the purple tips of her hair, caused me to pause and close my eyes. A nice Sunday afternoon read.
Sue Lilley is a new author for me to read - but I'm always willing to read a new author -- that way if they are really good, that is someone else that I enjoy continuing to read.
